Electric Heat Load Management

Available Rates

There are two electric heating rates available to members. The CH and PCH rates are available to homeowners whose primary heating system is electric heat (Portable, plug-in heaters do not qualify), such as a geothermal heat pump, air-source heat pump or electric baseboard, for example. The homeowner must be a member of the Cooperative taking monthly service concurrently under Rate Schedules A or GS (single phase service), sign a contract and install special equipment to begin receiving the rates below.

  1. Rate CH - Controlled Heating Rate
    • $.03 discount per kWh
    • A backup heating system that generates heat from an energy source other than electricity is required. Examples include gas and oil furnaces, wood stoves and fireplaces. Generators do not qualify as a backup heating system.
    • System will be controlled up to 400 hours per year with the longest interruption not to exceed 8 hours in any 24 hour period
  2. Rate PCH -Partial Controlled Heating Rate
    • $.015 discount per kWh
    • No backup heating system is required
    • System will be controlled up to 400 hours per year with the long interruption not to exceed 40 minutes per hour for up to a total of 6 hours or 9 times per day

These low rates are possible because of the money we save by controlling your electric heat during peak demand times.

Why do I need backup heat for the CH rate?

You need a backup heating system capable of maintaining the temperature in your house during a control period, which could be up to eight hours straight on the coldest days of the year.

How is the discount calculated?

Your electric heating system must be wired through a peak interrupter and subtractive auxiliary meter. Equipment is furnished to by Great Lakes Energy, installation of the subtractive meter base and the peak interrupter is the responsibility of the member. Once this equipment is installed, inspected by the county and the heating system is operational, the subtractive meter can be installed. The subtractive meter will record the kWh used by your electric heating system. Your existing electric meter will continue to record the kWh use of your other home appliances at the standard residential rate. You will receive one bill for both meters. Both meters will automatically send readings to our office on a daily basis allowing us to monitor your usage accurately and effectively.

Why control my electric heat?

Our power supplier is not currently controlling electric heating systems. Should they decide to begin controlling again, you will be notified so that we can install a LMT switch in your home. When we do begin controlling again, your electric heat can be controlled without affecting your living comfort. We will control at peak times when the demand for electricity is the greatest and our cost to provide that power is the highest. This saves us money which we return to you with these lower rates.

What if I’m not home?

If you’re away when we control your electric heat, your gas or oil furnace should come on automatically for you.
